Garden Clean-up and Spring Mulching – Try as we might to tidy our gardens and landscapes at season’s end, winter brings with it a multitude of circumstances that can leave yards and gardens looking disheveled. The latest snow storms brought heavy snow that caused a fair amount of breakage on trees and shrubs. Winter winds blew leaves, small twigs and trash into previously clean areas. Last year’s mulch is either caked and cracked or much of it is washed or worn away. Perennials must be cut back and beds cleaned up before the new season’s growth begins. Any remaining mulch from last year needs to be scarified or removed altogether if it’s been accumulating for several years. Protecting Shrubs, Bulbs, Perennials from Hungry Animals – Springtime brings with it an array of animals with a voracious appetite. Many of them now have young to feed or soon will. As trees, shrubs and perennials begin to wake up from their winter’s nap, they are highly susceptible to nibbling and gnawing, particularly at night. You can protect all vulnerable plants above and beneath the soil with REGULAR applications of repellent sprays or granules. Our garden center offers several tried and true product lines to choose from. Apply these repellents every two to three weeks, and especially after heavy rainfall.
