Planting in May – Most of us are itching to plant our annual flowers and summer vegetables by the beginning of May.  Every year brings slightly different scenarios that can affect the results of planting early.  The main issue is soil temperature.  When planting annuals, soil temperature is as important as air temperature.  Planting into soil that is colder than the environment they’re accustomed to, causes root shock, resulting in a significant setback in growth.  Planting annual flowers and summer vegetables in planters, raised beds, patio pots and hanging baskets in early May is less of a shock because the soil is warmer in above ground containers.  However, these are still susceptible to overnight cold damage.  On a clear, still night, temperatures below 45 degrees can cause frost/cold damage to tender annuals (Basil, peppers, dahlias, ageratum, etc.). We have had frost in our area as late as the 3rd week of May.  Be vigilant and cover plantings or move them under cover if the overnight temperatures are forecasted to dip below 45 degrees.  Better safe than sorry!

Fertilizing Young Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, and Bulbs in May – Spring fertilization is key to plant health.  It replenishes depleted nutrients, fortifies overall health, which aids in the ability to thwart insect infestation and disease.  Many broadleaf evergreens suffered Winterburn this winter.  Many other plants are suffering from the extended drought.  Yes, we are still in a drought.  Bucks County is in its 12th driest year to date (-2.96”) as per the statistics found on https://www.drought.gov/states/pennsylvania/county/Bucks.  Thus, all permanent plants will benefit from a spring feeding of slow-release fertilizer (Espoma Organic’s Tree-tone, Holly-tone, Plant-tone, etc.). Sprinkle around the drip line of the plant.  Work into soil taking care not to damage the roots.  If there is mulch, temporarily remove the mulch and feed then replace the mulch, or feed double the rate on top of the mulch.  Water thoroughly.

Protecting Trees and Shrubs from Insects and Diseases – With the warmer days we experienced in April, insects are on the move.  Many of you have reported seeing ticks and have already treated your yards. Insects are literally everywhere. Many of them are beneficial to our yards.  Others will eat our plant’s leaves, flowers and fruit if we let them.  Fortunately, we have learned to control and/or repel most of these pests with products that are safe and selective in their objectives.  We can manage insects and diseases systemically by applying long-lasting, low risk products that control a broader spectrum.  Of course, we carry a full line of organic solutions (OMRI certified) as well for our organic gardeners. Either way, we have what you need to keep your yards and gardens healthy and beautiful.

Weed Control in Landscaped Areas – Does anyone out there actually LIKE weeding? We don’t.  Perennial weeds or existing weeds are best removed with a treatment of herbicide that kills the root. There are organic options to kill them, though they provide top kill only, so most weeds will regrow and need to be retreated throughout the season.  To stop new weeds from germinating and establishing in mulched areas, apply Treflan (granular pre-emergent weed preventer) either under or on top of your mulch.  Keep your landscaped areas weed free all season with follow-up applications every 6 weeks through July, especially if your mulch depth is less than 3 inches.

Protecting Plants from Damage – Deer damage is nothing new.  Many of you have been dealing with plant damage caused by deer and rabbits for years. They can wreak havoc on the tender new plant growth.  Regular applications of repellent sprays and/or granules are key to protecting vulnerable plants.  Most manufacturers offer an estimate of timing for reapplication.  Many things affect this timeframe. Rain being the main factor. It is best to err on the side of applying sooner rather than later, as it’s more difficult to attain control if active feeding has already begun.  We have a large selection of various types of repellents to choose from for deer, rabbits, etc.  Our knowledgeable staff is here to help you choose the product that will work best for your situation.  Don’t wait until it’s too late!
