Fall is for Planting – If you didn’t know already, fall is the optimal time to plant perennials, shrubs and trees. The cooler nights slow vegetative growth signaling plants to put their remaining energy into strengthening and expanding their root systems. Planting now allows the new plants to acclimate and anchor their roots before winter sets in. Be sure to start them off right by amending the planting hole and mixing Espoma’s Bio-tone Starter Plus into the planting hole and backfill and finally applying a layer of mulch for protection and to help retain moisture in the root zone. Our fall sale on perennials, shrubs and trees has begun. Enjoy 35% of regular prices! Come on over and peruse our beautiful Nursery yard.

Fall Feeding of Perennials, Shrubs and Trees – Fall fertilization is best done when plants are dormant. While the plants in our landscapes are still in their active growth stage, feeding will stimulate new growth, which will not harden off before winter. Generally, winter dormancy begins in the landscape when the larger deciduous trees (maples, oaks, etc.) begin dropping leaves profusely. Typically, in early-mid October. We’ll talk more about fall fertilizing in our October newsletter.
Varmints in your Yard – This season has been rough. Lack of rain and water has driven deer, rabbits, voles and many other animals to seek moisture from wherever they can to survive. As such, many of them have fed on plants that they normally wouldn’t even consider. In some ways this has been much like winter months, but without the cold. Our goal continues to be protecting vulnerable plants with regular applications of animal repellents. Lawn Depot has a wide variety of repellent sprays and granular products that won’t harm wildlife, but will protect the plants. The key to controlling damage is regular and consistent applications. Stop in or call to discuss your specific needs and we’ll help you in planning a solution.
Everything Birds – Many of us enjoy feeding and housing birds all year long. Many more of us choose to only feed in the winter when the birds need our help. Whether the birds that have graced our yards this summer migrate or stay put, this is the time when they have a heightened appetite, which enables them to gain added weight and nutrition. This helps them stay healthy and provides the extra energy needed to migrate or keep warm. Our Garden Center carries a complete variety of bird feeds, from specialty mixes to straight feeds, plus feeders and mounting equipment, houses, baffles and squirrel deterrents, all year long. We encourage all of you to get involved with birding, whether all year long or just in the cold weather. You’ll be surprised how many different varieties of birds will be attracted to your yard.
