Landscapes in Early Spring

Garden Cleanup and Spring Mulching – All landscaped areas are crusty and littered with sticks, packaging, newspapers and all the junk that has blown in over the last several months.  Before adding the spring layer of your favorite mulch, you need to scarify any old mulch to break the crust and allow moisture to penetrate into plants’ root zones; you need to remove all weeds that have cropped up since your last weeding; you need to re-edge beds so their edges are sharp; you need to be sure that all perennials are cut back to the ground, and all desired shrub pruning is done; and you need to add your first application of pre-emergent WEED & GRASS PREVENTER.  Only after all these preliminary jobs have been done are you ready to pick up or order the delivery of your mulch.  Some of you will also choose to apply your spring shrub, bulb, and/or perennial fertilizer before applying the mulch.  Just be sure that you use only slow-release or organic-based fertilizers.

Protecting Shrubs, Bulbs, Perennials, Small Trees from Hungry Animals – Even though we haven’t had a lot of snow this winter, deer, rabbits and many other critters haven’t had much available food to sustain them.  As Mother Nature comes back to life, these critters are hungry, and all of them LOVE new growth on many of our plants, shrubs and trees. Lawn Depot has several products, both liquid and granule that are designed to REPEL wild life.  Most of these are egg-based, all-natural products that the varmints don’t like the taste of.  Never is anything harmed.  But, make no mistake, if you value your plants, you need to be diligent in keeping these animals at bay.  I prefer liquid repellents; I resumed my spraying in mid-February, and I re-apply every 7-10 days, even though some products claim to last up to 30 days.  It only takes once for tulips’ or lilies’ tp be eaten down to the nub, and then it’s too late.

Bird Food, Bird Houses, Feeders, and Nesting Boxes – Lawn Depot maintains a complete and wide variety of birding supplies year-round.  We all love feeding the songbirds, providing them with places to hatch their young, and enjoying them in the winter, when they need our help most, as well as in the spring, summer, and fall when they’re at their most colorful and enjoyable.  We’ve been doing this for many years, and will continue to do so.  If you haven’t enjoyed these beautiful, colorful guys at your home, try it.  You’ll love it too.  And birding items make great gifts, too.

We’ve been doing these Newsletters for a very long time.  We find it’s our best way of communicating with existing customers and finding new ones throughout the year.  Lawn and garden maintenance can be overwhelming to those of you who have other important things on your minds (kids, jobs, sports, etc.) and might not be sure just when is the IDEAL TIME TO APPLY …  That’s why we’re here.  We know what we’re doing and really enjoy discussing and advising those of you who might be having trouble with something lawn or garden oriented.  We’re proud to offer the best products available in the business, whether living or in bags, bottles or cans, and we really love interacting with you, our loyal friends and customers.  We can’t wait to see you soon and often in 2022.
