Fall is for Planting – Fall is the optimal time to plant perennials, shrubs and trees. The cooler nights slow vegetative growth signaling plants to focus their remaining energy into strengthening and expanding their root systems. Planting now allows the new plants to acclimate and anchor their roots before winter sets in. Be sure to start them off right by amending the soil, mixing Espoma’s Bio-tone Starter Plus (Now 25% off through September 30th on 4# and 8# bags) into the planting hole and backfill, then applying a layer of mulch for protection and to help retain moisture in the root zone. SAVE 35% OFF all perennials, roses, Fruit plants, shrubs and trees during our FALL SALE! We’ve got lots of great options for you and an extensive selection of native plants. Stop on over and take a look!
Mums, Asters, Cabbage and Kale, Oh My! – Add beautiful colors and textures to your beds and planters with mums, asters, ornamental cabbage and kale, pansies, ornamental peppers, grasses, cold crop vegetables and more! All of these fabulous plants can be found in our Nursery yard.
Fall Feeding of Perennials, Shrubs and Trees – Fall fertilization is best done when plants are dormant. While the plants in our landscapes are still in their active growth stage, feeding will stimulate new growth, which will not harden off before winter. Generally, winter dormancy begins in the landscape when the larger deciduous trees (maples, oaks, etc.) begin dropping leaves profusely. Typically, in early-mid October. As such, we’ll talk more about fall fertilizing in our October newsletter.
Varmints in your Yard – The deer and the rabbits and other various critters have been active all summer. They’ve become a year-round repellant challenge for all of us, but as foliage begins to fall from deciduous plants and sources of nutrition become very scarce for these “friends in nature”, our valuable landscape plants are at risk. Protect against feeding damage by applying sensory or physical barriers. Our garden center offers a great selection of liquid and granular repellent products and barrier plant protectors that will help you keep these beautiful pests at bay. They’re all safe for children, pets and wildlife. Stop in or call to discuss your specific needs and we’ll help you in planning a solution.
Everything Birds – We LOVE birds! On your visits, many of you have seen the array of feeders and the birds enjoying them along our ramp at the garden center. We carry a wide variety of bird feeds, from mixed seeds to straight feeds, plus feeders and mounting equipment, houses, baffles and squirrel deterrents, all year long. We encourage all of you to add some feeders to your yards and enjoy the sheer beauty of the birds in our area, whether all year long or just in the cold weather. Like us, birds are creatures of habit and once they know they can count on a food source, they won’t venture far. Let your feathered friends know you’ll be there for them by providing a dependable food source. You’ll be glad you did.
