Landscapes in May

Annuals & Vegetable Update – We would normally have a Nursery Yard overflowing with beautiful annuals and vigorous vegetable plants right now. Unfortunately, this year we’ve had to postpone receiving shipments of annuals and vegetables until we are permitted to open to the public.  Out of concern for the safety and well-being of our staff, we are working with a skeleton crew on property. We are stretched thin already and annuals and vegetables require a good deal of care and maintenance. We’re sad that our Nursery is vacant of all of the lovely annuals, but we look forward to offering whatever you need once we reopen to the public.

Fertilizing Perennials, Shrubs, and Small Trees – Permanent plantings should be fed twice each year, in the spring, as they come out of dormancy and in the fall, after they’ve entered winter dormancy.  This feeding is best done with either granular or formed stake, slow-release fertilizers.  We like granular feeds for perennials and small shrubs, stakes (or spikes) for larger shrubs and trees.  Roses are the exception to this as they require continuous feeding (every 4-6 weeks) and care throughout the growing season.  Espoma’s Rose-Tone is a fantastic organic granular food that breaks down gradually providing a long-lasting nutrient reservoir activated throughout the growing season. Rose-Tone’s all-natural formula contains Bio-tone®, a proprietary blend of beneficial microbes that enhance natural organic fertilizer to ensure superior plant growth.  Likewise, BioAdvanced Rose & Flower Care protects your roses from insects and diseases when applied properly every six weeks during the growing season.  Use one or both of these great products and you’re sure to have gorgeous plants and blooms all season long!  Let us know what you need and we’ll deliver right to your door!

Controlling Insect Pests and Diseases in the Landscape – Insects are everywhere in our landscape.  Most are inconsequential and should be ignored, but others chew on or suck the life out of the leaves, roots, and fruits of valuable plants, and must be either controlled or repelled.  Fortunately, there are many products on the market today that can kill or repel the undesirable pests with safe and easy application.  Many are season-long in their ability to control; others must be applied every 4-6 weeks, but all are safe to use.  Lawn Depot sells a wide variety of pesticides and repellants, in granular and liquid forms.  We encourage you to call us and discuss your situation with one of our friendly and talented staff members.  We’ll guide you in the correct direction.
