As we compose this newsletter, June is just over a week away. More than half of May has been cool, cloudy and wet. While the precipitation is aiding in erasing last year’s rainfall deficit, it comes with its own set of issues for lawns, landscapes and gardens. Many of us are seeing diseases in lawns and on trees, shrubs and perennials. Some warmer season annuals and vegetables are experiencing stagnated growth, cold damage and rot on leaves and blossoms. While we know that we’ll be blessed with stretches of dry, sunny weather in June, we need to be vigilant in checking our yards for disease and pest issues, so that we can thwart them before they get a foothold and become an even larger problem.
Additionally, the rain has led to lawns growing like crazy. Resulting in many of us having to mow twice a week to keep clumps left by mowing to a minimum. It is imperative that you NEVER leave large clumps of mowed grass on your lawn, as it can smother the growing turf. Spring weeds are profuse this year due to the great growing conditions, especially in yards that didn’t receive a weed control application last fall. While spring is a reactionary time to apply weed control, it’s better than not doing it at all. As we get further into summer, mowing practices need to be adjusted. From timing of mowing, fertilization and insect control to ensuring the proper mower deck height, all of these factors have a direct effect on the health of your lawn.
Lawn Depot Garden Center is your one stop shop for all things lawn and garden. Inside you’ll find all of the staples you need: seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, tools, gardening equipment, wildlife management and birding. Outside in the Nursery Yard, we have a vast selection of annuals (flowers and vegetables) in many sizes, perennials, shrubs and trees you’ll surely want for your landscape beds, pots, window boxes, and planters. As always, our knowledgeable staff is ready to assist you with all of your lawn, landscape and gardening questions. The store is open every day, M – F 8-6, Sat. 8-5, Sun 9-3 through the end of June. Be sure to check our website for hours changes in July & August.
Lawn Depot Turf Management continues to be very busy this month, with our regular late spring feeding, weed control and grub prevention activities. In addition to the continued spring activities, our Turf Management group will be doing lawn evaluations and making recommendations for fall seeding of lawns in need of upgrading, and we’ll continue to evaluate new customers’ lawns for both regular maintenance applications and special applications (core aeration, liming, seeding, etc.). Either give us a call (215-348-5553) or visit our website (www.lawndepotinc.com) and we’ll be out within a few days to look at, evaluate and quote you a price for the service(s) you’re seeking.
June is a transitional time when many of us are still planning, planting, fertilizing and mulching. There’s even more to do for many of us as our yards continue to recover from the stress and damage caused by last year’s drought. Many of us have waited to see what recovery there will be, if any. If you’re unsure or have questions regarding your lawns, shrubs, trees, etc., stop by with pictures or samples and we’ll help guide you through your options. Weed control in lawns and landscapes can be attained with both liquid and granular herbicides in June and don’t forget to regularly water and fertilize annuals and vegetables to maximize their beauty and productivity. Stay active in the yard this summer, and you’re sure to reap the benefits. Remember to keep up to date on our store specials and sales via our website, Facebook and Instagram.
