Insect and Disease Damage and Solutions – Summer conditions made plants more susceptible to insects and diseases.  If your plants are experiencing either or both issues, rest assured that we have solutions (some with multiple options) for you.  Stop by, call or email us today!

Fertilization – Fall fertilization of perennials, shrubs and trees is best done when plants are dormant. While the plants in our landscapes are still in their active growth stage, feeding will stimulate new growth, which will not harden off before winter. Generally, winter dormancy begins in the landscape when the larger deciduous trees (maples, oaks, etc.) begin dropping leaves profusely, which is typically, early to mid-October.  We’ll cover more specifics about fall fertilizing in our October newsletter. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, stop and discuss your situation with us.

On the flip side, feel free to fertilize annuals as directed or needed through the fall season to keep them looking great.  Liquid fertilizers (Jack’s Classic or Schultz) will give them the quick shot of nutrients they need to perform their best.

Fall is for planting – Fall is the perfect time to plant perennials, shrubs, and trees. Cooler nights slow top growth and encourage stronger, deeper root systems, giving new plants time to settle in before winter. Help them establish faster by amending the soil, mixing Espoma’s Bio-tone Starter Plus (now 25% off through September 30th – all sizes) into the planting hole and backfill, and adding mulch to protect roots and retain moisture. Starting September 11th save 35% off all perennials, shrubs, and trees during our Fall Sale! Our Nursery has plenty of great choices, including a wide selection of native plants. Stop by and take a look!

Colorful fall mums, ornamental cabbage and kale, ornamental peppers, celosia, and cold crops will arrive the week of August 31st. Feel free to contact us regarding timing and availability. And don’t forget to add a top dressing of mulch to spruce things up after planting!

Deer and Other Pests in the Yard – We just can’t catch a break! Even with sufficient rainfall this growing season, valuable landscape plants are still being damaged. Although some plants are labeled deer- or rabbit-resistant, no plant is truly deer-proof. Protect plants from feeding damage with sensory or physical barriers. If feeding is already active, start with a liquid repellent to gain control, then use it alongside a granular repellent. Over time, reduce the liquid applications while continuing granular treatments to maintain a steady barrier. We also carry options for rabbits, voles, moles, and other pests. Need repellent advice? Stop by the garden center. Our knowledgeable staff can help you choose the right solutions to keep your plants safe.

For the Love of Birds – As fall draws closer, birds that don’t migrate, sense the change and begin creating their winter cache. Birdfood is an important part of that.  Stop by the garden center and browse our extensive Birding department.  From feeders to birdbaths to birdfood, we have it! All year-long we stock a wide variety of specialty and mixed feeds, including suet, mealworms, cardinal food, finch food, straight black oil sunflower and much more.  Add a feeder or two to your yard and enjoy the variety of birds in our area. Like us, birds are creatures of habit and once they know they can count on a food source, they won’t venture far. We’ve got everything you need to keep your feathered friends flocking to your yard.
