Garden Clean-up, Plant Care and Spring Mulching – This winter has thankfully provided much needed moisture, but we’ve still got a long road ahead. The extent of the damage done by the extended drought is yet to be realized. Even well-established plants have and may continue to become victims of the last season’s exceptionally dry months. The wet winter is a good start to salvaging our precious landscapes. Cleaning up all of the debris that has blown in and twigs that have come down is the first order of business. Later in March is the perfect time to feed shrubs and trees. Fertilization is key to the recovery process. Shrubs and small trees are best fed with granular fertilizers, such as Espoma Organic’s Holly-tone, Tree-Tone and Plant-Tone, which will be 25% off from March 21st through April 6th. Larger trees can be fertilized this way or with formed fertilizer tree spikes. Perennials must be cut back before new growth begins and old mulch broken up or removed before applying a fresh layer. Mulch is imperative in aiding with moisture retention and root protection throughout the growing season. At the Lawn Depot we’ve got a wide array of premium bulk and bagged mulches and soils. We’ll deliver it to your drive or you can pick it up at the store. Don’t miss our March MULCH MADNESS sale! All bagged mulches are 20% off (while supplies last) and save $25 on bulk mulch when you order 2 yards or more for delivery. Both sales run through March 31st. Be sure to keep your new mulch looking great, by applying a garden pre-emergent (Treflan) to stop weeds before they start. Pre-emergent herbicides work by preventing successful seed germination. They do not kill existing weeds. Existing weeds need to be removed with a non-selective liquid herbicide or physically dug out.
Protecting Your Landscape from Predation – The lack of rain last fall made deer and other wildlife more brazen with their foraging. Although we’ve had sufficient moisture this winter, springtime brings with it a renewed awakening for tasting the treasures in our landscapes. As trees, shrubs and perennials begin to push new growth, they are highly susceptible to nibbling and gnawing, particularly at night. Protect vulnerable plants above and beneath the soil with REGULAR applications of repellent sprays or granules. Choose from any of the tried and true product lines we carry. It’s important for continued control to apply these repellents every two to three weeks, and most definitely after heavy rainfall.
Bird Food, Feeders, etc. – Birds, bees, bats and butterflies are all wonderful additions to the yard. Each one has its place in our own personal ecosystems. Bees for pollination, bats for insect control, butterflies for pollination and beauty and birds for feathered companionship and beauty. You may choose to foster a habitat for one or more in your yard. Whatever you decide, know we’ve got you covered with bat, pollinator and butterfly houses, plus a vast array of products for birds! Our Birding department boasts an excellent selection of feeders, poles, baffles, houses, suet and bird food mixes. Attracting birds to our feeders, providing them places to nest on our properties and to keeping them happy and healthy is our goal! What better way to relax and enjoy your yard than to watch and listen to these beautiful creatures. They really are wonderful! We’ve got everything you’ll need to enjoy your birds as much as we do.
