Fall is in the air!

The end of August is fast approaching and summer will soon be in our rearview. Now is the time to evaluate our lawns and landscaped areas to determine their condition and devise a plan for them to be in tip-top shape before winter.  With the excessive heat and wet conditions this summer, diseases, insects and weeds have thrived.  We need to counter them by making plans to take the necessary steps to ensure that our lawns are thick, well fed and weed-free; that beds are cleaned up; and that perennials, trees, and shrubs are fed, pruned as necessary and protected from pests and winter damage.  The earlier we begin with fall lawn and landscape chores the more we can accomplish while the weather is favorable.  Let’s get ready to hit the ground running!

Fall is the most important season for lawns. It’s the best time for seeding to repair summer damage and upgrade all lawns; the most important time for feeding; and the absolute best time to rid all lawns of the broadleaf weeds that have encroached over the summer.  Additionally, it’s a great time to improve growing conditions by core aerating and liming lawns.

Abundant rainfall coupled with excessive heat has resulted in increased weed activity, both grassy weeds (crabgrass, Japanese stiltgrass, nutsedge) and broadleaf perennial weeds, as well as a lot of turf disease.  Grass has been growing since spring with no slowing of the growth rate leaving lawns fully exhausted.  In many lawns, turf has thinned with the heat allowing disease to develop and weeds to encroach.  Follow our recommendations in the LAWNS section below to restore healthy, weed-free growth to your lawn.

Lawn Depot Turf Management has begun its early fall application work (broadleaf weed control and early fall fertilizer) and shady lawn overseeding/core aeration jobs.  We urge any of you who got quotations for fall seeding, but have not yet confirmed activation, to do so immediately in order to guarantee your spot on our schedule.  If you haven’t already requested an estimate for core aeration or seeding, or both, and are interested in having us perform the work, please call the office (215-348-5553) or look us up on the web (https://lawndepotinc.com/) and select Request an Estimate.  It’s a busy time for our Turf Management group because the ideal conditions for growing grass from seed only happens in the fall.  If you are interested in utilizing Lawn Depot Turf Management for either regular or special application work (core aeration, seeding, liming, etc.), just give us a call or request an estimate via our web site.  We’ll be out to measure and evaluate your lawn (or sections thereof) within a few days and email you a quote for the requested work.

The Lawn Depot Garden Center will operate on summer hours through Sunday, August 24th (Monday through Saturday 9-5, closed Sunday).  Monday, August 25th, we’ll begin our extended fall hours, (Monday-Friday 8-6, Saturday 8-5, Sunday 9-3) however, we will be closed on Labor Day.   The nursery yard is filled with thriving perennials, fruiting plants, shrubs and trees.  Around the last week of August, beautiful fall mums in an array colors and sizes, as well as cold crops and herbs will be in stock.  Pansies, Ornamental cabbage, kale and peppers will follow soon thereafter. The store is filled with all the lawn and landscaping tools you’ll need, premium Lawn Depot seed blends, fertilizers, pesticides, mulch, repellents and birding products.  Be sure you’re in the know this fall; join our email list, follow us on Facebook and/or Instagram, or call the garden center for information on our latest sales and special deals.

As the season transitions from late summer to early fall, we know many of you will have questions, issues and problems to solve.  Rest assured that we’re ready and waiting to assist you in any way we can.  Some things inevitably change, but our dedication to being your “go to” place for lawn and garden know how is steadfast.  We’re here, and we’re ready for you.
