Insect and Disease Damage and Solutions – Excessive heat coupled with wet conditions and high humidity has greatly increased insect and disease issues this summer. If you’re plants are experiencing any of these issues, rest assured that we have solutions (some with multiple options) for you. Stop by, call or email us today!
Fertilization is necessary – Perennial plants have enjoyed sufficient rainfall this summer. However, the abundance of rainfall leads to depletion of soil nutrients. Perennial plants are in need of a late summer pick me up feeding. A liquid fertilizer application (Jack’s Classic) or some granular Espoma Organic’s Plant-tone or Flower-tone will help them perk up and regain strength until we reach fall feeding time and they can receive their usual fall formula.
Fall is for planting – Late August/early September brings us bright fall colors to freshen up our tired annuals in beds and planters. Fall is the perfect time to add some perennials, shrubs or trees to your existing landscape or maybe even create a new garden area. Give your landscape a “like new” look this fall by removing weeds, adding fall plants and applying a top dressing of mulch.
Our nursery boasts a fantastic assortment of perennials, shrubs and trees including a hearty selection of native varieties. Fall mums, ornamental cabbage & kale, ornamental peppers, celosia, and cold crops will be here toward the end of August, so far as the weather is conducive for these cooler annuals. Call us for availability. Once the heat of summer breaks and cooler evenings set in, it’s prime time for all of your fall planting.
Deer and other Pest Repellents – Well, not much has changed here. Deer and rabbits have been relentless since the onset of last year’s drought. Even though we’ve had ample rainfall, you all have been reporting the continued devouring of your valuable landscape plants. Remember, some plants are considered deer and rabbit resistant, but there is no such thing as deer proof. If you’ve been applying repellents (even with little success), don’t stop! Any control is better than none. Without it, the damage will be far greater. If there is active feeding, a liquid application is recommended initially to gain control. It can be used in conjunction with a granular product and then slowly reduced with continued granular product applications to keep the barrier in place. Need repellent advice? Come on over to the garden center. We’ve got lots of options and the knowledgeable staff to help you keep these crepuscular visitors at bay.
For the Love of Birds – Natural food sources are still not what they should be for our feathered friends. Last year’s drought greatly affected the abundance of natural food sources available this season. Hopefully, the rainfall we’ve received this year will help replenish them for next season. In the meantime, it’s imperative that we aid them by supplying reliable food sources via our feeders. Take stock of your birding supplies and determine what’s needed to keep your feathered friends flocking to your yard. In return they’ll reward you with daily visitation, funny antics and songs. Stop in to experience our extensive Birding department. From feeders to birdbaths to birdfood, we have it! All year-long we stock a wide variety of specialty and mixed feeds, including suet, mealworms, cardinal food, finch food, straight black oil sunflower and much more. Birdfood and suet (excluding cases) are currently 30% off through August 31st! Stock up and save!
As much as we love summer, with its long days and outdoor activities, we enjoy the beginning of the fall season.
